Composer brief:
Friends After Good Sound puts on three concerts a year each premiering three new works by three different composers.
In order to be considered for this programming, composers must be living in or around the Portland, Oregon area - willing and able to attend 6 or more rehearsals with the group - be contacted by the group 6 to 9 months ahead of the concert - all while being open to work with the group in a variety of compositional methods.
While composers are certainly encouraged to bring their own aesthetic to their works, Friends After Good Sound is very interested in putting on new works that focus on electro-acoustic methods and collectivist structures geared towards collaboration and cooperation. BIPOC, Queer and Fem composers are specifically encouraged to reach out
What does it mean to be a “composer”?
Friends After Good Sound does not limit our collaborative partners to those who come from a Western Classical music background. If you are a music maker of any type (singer songwriter, producer, improviser, classical composer, raper, spoken word artist etc.) we HIGHLY encourage you to reach out.
After composers have agreed to work with the ensemble they are given three to six months to prepare their piece for the ensemble. After this period Friends After Good Sound will begin rehearsing their works 3-4 months ahead of the concert, totally at minimum of six - ten months of preparation for the composer.
No matter how conceptual or collaborative their working method is, the composer must have a fully formed idea and or path towards the completion of their musical work before the group begins devoting serious rehearsal time. This is often actualized in the form of a score though other forms of communication can be accepted.
Text scores, graphic scores, standard notation scores, lead sheets are all acceptable and due to the different musical backgrounds of the ensemble, different methods of notation or instruction might (will) be required for different performers at the same time. Examples of scores that are considered acceptable, initial submissions, will be provided to the composers so that it is clear what is expected 3-4 months before the concert.
